MONOTYPES: THE "PAINTERLY PRINT"
Diane Edwards knew as soon as she first entered the print shop that she must
explore this medium, as have many artists who were better known as painters,
including Degas, Whistler and Warhol. She became intoxicated by the immediacy
of the monotype process, the visceral feeling of its tools (the rag versus a
paintbrush), the different scents and properties of its materials. A lifelong
artist, primarily favoring colorful and whimsical watercolors and pastels,
Diane found that an unexpected fusion began to appear in her new work. Whether
an abstract, landscape, portrait or still-life, the monotypes beautifully
united her wide array of subjects and styles with the underlying clarity and
strength of her line.
Because monotype prints need to be painted and completed within about one hour,
it proved to be an ideal medium for an intuitive painter, as Diane describes
herself, one who deeply believes in the concept of working in the moment. With
monotypes, it is possible to produce work(s) either related to the first print,
or completely different. Subsequent prints, called "ghosts," take on their own
distinct identities.
Diane also creates mosaic birdhouses and recycled cookie tins,
made with hand cut glass and mirrors, beads, antique buttons and/or
glitter.
